Sony ECM-HS1 Gun Zoom Microphone
7/6/2003
Not what I expected. Does not amplify distant sounds, and majority
of the sound is still picked up by the built-in mic. This is a
shotgun type, mono mic that will record to both, left and right,
channels. There is a 3-way switch. The settings are Zoom-Off-Gun.
In Zoom mode, when you zoom into a subject, the mic narrows the
direction of the sound source, creating a tunnel like effect, making
the sound seem distant. Off just turns off the mic, and Gun makes
it work somewhat like your typical directional shotgun mic. If
it had a gain, or volume control, it would make this a more decent
mic.
It uses Sony's intelligent accessory shoe. There is no cable connector on this mic, so I'm assuming, this mic will only work on Sony camcorders. I've returned this item.
An important note about powered mics
They use batteries. They have an on/off switch. After using these mics, it is
important to turn them off. This is my only problem, and could be your's. Always
carry backup batteries, or know where the nearest Radio Shack is. The other thing
is to use some type of headset (or earphones). You will always turn on the camcorder,
but sometimes forget to turn on the mic.
