Canon WS-20 Wrist Strap Review
06/10/2006
I've been using Canon's Digital Rebel XT / EOS 350D for some time
now and if there is anything I dislike about using the camera,
it would have to be the neck strap that came with it. Canon's
neck strap is very high quality but, after a period of time wearing
it, the back of my neck seems to turn raw. I could do away with
the neck strap, but the thought of accidentally dropping the camera
warrants the use of it.
Most of the time, when I plan to use the camera, I carry along
a small camera shoulder bag (or backpack). When I'm ready to shoot,
I pull the camera out of the bag, put the camera strap around my
neck, and start taking pictures. When I'm done taking pictures,
I place the camera back into the bag, carefully fold up the neck
strap, and close the bag. I've been looking at more expensive (comfortable)
neck straps but what I really wanted was a wrist strap.
I've been using a compact/pocket digital cameras for a while now
and the thing I like about them is the wrist strap that comes with
them. It gives me a secure feeling that if I ever lose grip on
the camera, with the wrist strap, I won't drop it (camera) and,
for me, it's an easier way to carry the camera. So I bought Canon's
WS-20 Wrist Strap knowing that it was designed for Canon's camcorders
(and the only wrist strap that Canon makes... for the moment). |

| A look at Canon's WS-20 Wrist Strap |
The camera strap on Canon's WS-20 Wrist Strap is a little wider
than Canon's neck strap by almost 1/8 inch. I was somewhat concerned
that the strap will not fit the metal loop on my Digital Rebel
XT.
The wrist strap itself is fairly soft and has a texture and feel
of thick cotton canvas. The quality is pretty good. Hmmm... let's
see if this wrist strap will fit my Digital Rebel XT. |
| Using Canon's WS-20 Wrist Strap |
The wider camera (or should say camcorder) strap of the
WS-20 just barely fits the metal loop on my Digital Rebel XT. Whereas
with the neck strap, there was a lot of slop, the WS-20 wrist
strap is a nice snug fit.
Using
Canon's WS-20 Wrist Strap on my Digital Rebel XT, for the first time,
gave me a sense of freedom. What I mean by that is I was able to
hold the camera at arms length, or high above my head, without the
restrictions associated with the neck strap. |
| Conclusion |
Canon's WS-20 Wrist Strap, for me, is a joy to use because with the
camera on my wrist, it makes it that much easier to grab and take
a shot and to be able to position the camera in such a way that I
couldn't normally do with the neck strap. There is also a sense of
security (should I ever lose grip on the camera)
when using the wrist strap and it makes carrying the camera around
a lot easier.
I should also add that it
takes up very little space in a camera bag (or backpack) and feels
very comfortable on my wrist, especially on a hot humid day.
Canon's WS-20 Wrist Strap, or any wrist strap for that matter, isn't
for everyone but, for me personally, it's a comfort knowing that
it isn't a pain on the neck.
